The investment potential of banknotes has been evident over the years. Some items have seen a growth in value of 10,000% since the end of the last war! American Confederate States notes, for example, could then be bought for about 25c each in the USA. Now, they are hard to find for 100 times that amount. Even the indiscriminate collector can expect profit in the long-run, for most banknotes tend to rise in value. Scarcity and demand are the chief factors that govern market values, and banknotes are only produced in limited numbers, so when production of each note ceases, the existing examples can only become increasingly scarce and therefore increasingly valuable.

Typically, collectors will use an adequate reference book to find the note they want. Then, they look through the many price lists they might have to find a dealer who offers the same note in an acceptable condition for an acceptable price. Lots of dealers put parts of their price lists in Bank Note Reporter ads. The collector then either calls or faxes the dealer with a credit card number or send a check in the mail.

In general, I highly prefer giving bullion coins as gifts for two main reasons. First, bullion is cheaper. I'm usually on a very limited gift budget and expensive rare coins are just not an option for me. Second, unless you are giving a gift to a seasoned coin collector, the average person will not know or deeply appreciate the difference between bullion and numismatics. In introducing someone to the world of gold, bullion is great. Moreover, many bullion coins these days such as American Eagles and Canadian Maple leafs are truly beautiful coins. Get a mint brand new bullion coin and you will be giving away a valuable and beautiful gift.

In general, I collect pre-1965 90% silver U.S. coinage in very high grades, and I think they are excellent choices for the average person on a tight budget. I also believe that most types of U.S. Nickels are very undervalued right now, as well as later date (2002 through 2007) half dollars in the highest grades. The mintages for these recent half dollars are extremely low! In general, most Walking Liberty, Franklin, and silver Kennedy half dollars are undervalued according to many experts.

U.S. Large Size (pre 1928) "Horseblanket" or "Saddleblanket" Notes. All U.S. currency made prior to 1928 is of a larger size than modern "small size" bills, hence the nicknames "Horseblanket" or "Saddleblanket." There were many different series and types of notes printed prior to 1928 by the Federal government, and values range from the very common 1923 $1 Silver Certificates (blue seals), worth from $10 to $100 depending on condition, to ultra-rarities that can be worth tens of thousands of dollars or more. If you come into possession of any "large size" bills, we suggest that you consult one of our currency experts here at CAA-Heritage to help you make a determination of value.

Gold certificates are titles for a stipulated amount of gold. You can take physical delivery of the gold or trade on it through the certificates. Another scheme is to go in for a gold accumulation plan - one that allows you to buy gold for a fixed sum each month. This allows you to benefit from acquiring it at a market average price.

Does it pass the silver coin ring test? Silver coins have a distinctive ring when held on the tip of a finger and tapped with another coin. Be careful doing this test, though; you don't want to ding or damage the coin, or drop it onto a hard surface, so use some judgement. The ring test can be helpful when all other easy methods of checking are inconclusive. Remember, if something ever feels "wrong" about a silver coin, don't buy it! Trust your instincts! And if you've already bought it, send it back!

One big category of coin damage we see is from staple scratches. Much of this damage comes from staples that are not completely clinched. Normal staplers leave a curl of the staple rising above the surface. This piece of staple can easily scratch adjacent coins as the coin shifts in a box or is removed or inserted from the box. Flat clinch staplers fully compress the staple into the surface of the holder leaving nothing behind to damage other coins. We like the Max HD-50DF because it is full size and uses regular staples. Max also makes half strip and palm size versions for collectors that prefer a smaller stapler. All three staplers completely clinch the staple as part of the stapling proces
